Green Light

"Green Light" is the entry and, in my opinion, the concept of song. If Melodrama was a story, "Green Light" would be the preface. "Green Light" is the perfect dichotomy of pleasure and despair. The raw lyricism is quite melancholy, yet Lorde creates a melodic and nuanced pop song. The lyrics of the song revolve around heartbreak and unsuccessful closure. "Green Light" could mean a green light in literal terms. However, another theory is that green could symbolize envy. It's a possibility, but it's unlikely since the song is about moving past a major heartbreak.

"The song is really about those moments, kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards" (Lorde).

I believe that "Green Light" is Lorde’s emulation of how one feels after a heartbreak. The mixed feelings of jealousy, affliction, and bitterness. Lorde wanted to reproduce a renaissance state of mind after the misery of heartbreak. After a storm, we tend to start over and forget about our past sentiments.

The song is also a splendid mix of electro-pop, dance-pop, and post-disco. Likewise, the backing tracks in all the Melodrama songs are absolutely astounding. The melodic piano in the pre-chorus and the drums during the chorus complement each other. Personally, the most remarkable part of the song is the transcendental, climactic vocal escalation at 1:50. Lorde never fails to make an eloquent lyrical and harmonic aligned track.

"Green Light" is a catchy and popular song. However, it doesn't make my top three on this album. The song is magnificent, but it does not contain any of the clever and profound lyricism involved in some of the other Melodrama songs. It makes the quota for a rudimentary heartbreak song. Although, it has Lorde's notable incorporation of particularity and proficient ability to produce this timeless pop classic. It slightly distinguishes itself from other pop songs with its less sappy connotation.
