Liability

The fifth track, "Liability", flawlessly put the mellow in Melodrama. The melancholy track sets a mood of blue vulnerability. Lorde describes feelings of self-burden and isolation within the facade of her publicized life. Lorde placed a somber song in the middle of the album, symbolizing the lows that occur at midnight. The tonal variety in Melodrama is comparable to an emotional rollercoaster; the album starts with high energy, only to dip and go back up again. She used the word "liability" in the context of burdening others with themselves. The genuine and relatable feeling of being a deadweight is expressed in the lyrics. The understandable emotion carried in this song is why it has touched so many hearts.

"Liability" is a soft pop piano ballad. It is composed in D-flat major. The production in this track is raw and expresses heartfelt emotion. The stripped production of this song allows Lorde's beautiful vocals to shine. One could argue that this symbolizes the vulnerability and pain shown in the lyricism. It also helps the listener travel through the five stages of grief. When you listen to this song, your ears don't listen, but your heart does.

My rating/review:

I have very little criticism for this song because of the perfect emulation of raw emotion. "Liability" is Melodrama's designated crying song. But it's so sad that so many people can relate to it. Since this is a short song I'll keep it short.
